The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
