New research indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such medications should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
