Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
